DfD Mass Timber
Optimizing value across the entire life of a building
This research proposes standards for the design of disassemblable mass timber buildings, while using a hypothetical parking garage as a prototype. As the structure takes on new uses, the initial design decisions made during construction allows it to adapt to its new requirements. Material selection and large-scale dovetail joinery allows the mass timber elements to retain their maximum integrity, so they can serve useful purposes either within the building itself or in another mass timber structure. This adaptibility incentivizes maintaining the long-term value of the building, creating a whole new market.
